Why you should choose a low sugar yogurt for your children

Yogurt will less sugar is a healthy snack choice

With childhood obesity rates on the rise in Saudi Arabia, it’s more important than ever to provide children with healthy alternatives to over processed and high-sugar junk foods.

Choosing healthy snacks for your children like low sugar yogurt is a great start. But be sure to check the labels. Not all yogurts are created equally. With so many yogurt choices out there, it’s easy to overlook the fact that many of them are packed with fats, calories and sugars.

When deciding on healthy yogurt options for your family, one of the most important things to do is look at is the amount of sugar added. It’s easy to think you are choosing a healthy yogurt when you buy “fat-free” or “non-fat” options, but even these can be loaded down with added sugar that your kids don’t need.

Be sure to buy a low sugar yogurt. That means, you should look at the label and see how much sugar is added. Low sugar yogurt options have around 12 grams per 6 ounce serving. All yogurts include some natural sugars because it is a fermented dairy product. Those naturally-occurring sugars that come from lactose, typically measure about 12 grams. When you buy fruit flavored yogurts, you are likely to see more sugar on the label. You can check the list of ingredients to see if the added sugar is coming from real fruits, or if it is coming from processed sugars, like high fructose corn syrup.

The next step when shopping for healthy yogurt for your family is to check the label for the number of calories in each serving. Many times yogurt is served in single-serving containers. For single-serving containers measuring 6 ounces, try not to exceed 120 calories. Sugars play a big role in the amount of calories in yogurt. Avoiding high calorie sweeteners like corn syrup means less calories and healthier kids.

Low sugar yogurt is a great snack alternative to junk food. In addition to tasting good, kids will also benefit from the calcium and live cultures found in yogurt. Cultures, otherwise known as “good bacteria,” help with added absorption of vitamin D and calcium and are great for growing bones.
